It’s time for a change of leadership.
After 38 years of classroom teaching at Calapooia Middle School, Kris knows what makes schools work well. Kris believes that each student, every family and all teaching and classified staff deserve to be supported, seen, and heard. Born and raised in Oregon, Kris is now a grandmother of two GAPS students.
Business must be effective and efficient.
The district needs to negotiate contracts on time, using a collaborative process that has served Albany well for years. Books and materials need to be purchased for all subject areas on a regular basis so teachers have what they need to promote excellence in instruction.
Money from the state must be wisely allocated.
The last board spent hundreds of thousands of dollars buying out contracts and maintained an unnecessarily large reserve fund. Every dollar should be spent for the benefit of students and in pursuit of educational goals. Staff salaries need to be competitive with districts of similar size so we can attract and retain effective staff members.
Communication is essential.
Public communication must be welcomed at board meetings. The board answers to the public that elected them, and they need to pay attention to community concerns. Teachers and classified staff are experts on what is happening in school life, and their input should be sought when problems and concerns arise. Everybody needs to be treated with kindness and respect.
